In the Know

US, Britain, EU sign world's first AI treaty

The United States, European Union, and the United Kingdom have made history by signing the world’s first legally binding international treaty on AI. Known as the Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence, Human Rights, Democracy, and the Rule of Law, this agreement aims to balance AI innovation with the protection of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. Signed by over 50 countries, including major AI developers, the treaty marks a significant step in establishing a global regulatory framework for AI.

Key Points

  • The treaty has been signed by the US, UK, EU, and countries like Israel, Norway, and Iceland, with more expected to join. It promotes global cooperation in managing AI risks.

  • The treaty requires AI developers to ensure their systems respect privacy, equality, and human dignity. It provides legal recourse for individuals affected by AI-related human rights violations.

  • Both sectors must comply with safeguards against AI misuse. AI systems are expected to uphold democratic principles and avoid bias or discriminatory outcomes.

  • The treaty complements existing regulatory measures like the EU’s AI Act and aligns with other global initiatives such as the G7 AI pact and the Bletchley Declaration.

Although some critics argue that the treaty lacks punitive enforcement mechanisms, it represents a major milestone in regulating AI technologies globally.More countries are expected to join, further strengthening international cooperation in the AI landscape.
