TSMC Raises Revenue Forecast Amid Surging AI Chip Demand

Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, raised its full-year revenue forecast on Thursday due to the surging demand for chips used in artificial intelligence, while also rejecting the idea of a joint venture factory in the United States.

Key Points

  • TSMC increased its 2024 revenue forecast to growth of slight to above the mid-20% range in U.S. dollar terms, up from the previous prediction of low to mid-20% range.

  • The company's net profit for April-June was T$247.8 billion ($7.60 billion), surpassing market expectations.

  • TSMC emphasized strong demand for AI chips, with Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei noting the intense interest from customers to incorporate AI functionality into their devices.

  • Despite recent comments from U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, TSMC confirmed it will not change its expansion plans in Arizona, Japan, and potentially Europe, rejecting the idea of a joint venture in the U.S.

  • For the current quarter, TSMC expects revenue to rise by up to 34%, adjusting its capital expenditure plans to between $30 billion and $32 billion.

With robust demand for AI chips and strong financial performance, TSMC is well-positioned to capitalize on the global AI boom. The company remains committed to its strategic expansion plans while maintaining a cautious approach to new joint ventures, ensuring its leadership in the semiconductor industry.

The app supports creating emojis, clip art, wallpapers, monograms, and avatars, with AI tools for editing and restyling images. Future updates will include a "replace background" feature. Additionally, Designer integrates with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint via Copilot for Pro subscribers and offers AI editing capabilities in Microsoft Photos on Windows 11.

Quick Takes

  • Ukraine Develops AI Systems for Advanced Drone Operations: Ukraine is developing AI systems to operate fleets of drones, aiming to gain a technological edge against the Russian invasion. These AI-enabled drones can navigate and coordinate autonomously, countering Russian signal jamming and working in large groups, but raise ethical concerns about the use of autonomous weapons.

  • Samsung Enhances AI Capabilities with Acquisition: Samsung is set to enhance its AI offerings by acquiring Oxford Semantic Technologies, a U.K.-based knowledge graph startup, to integrate its AI reasoning engine into Samsung's edge devices. This move follows Samsung's recent announcement to incorporate Galaxy AI and Google’s AI model Gemini into its products, including the Galaxy 24 and its new foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

  • AI Startup to Revolutionize NPC Interactions in Video Games: Artificial Agency, founded by ex-Google DeepMind researchers, has developed an AI behavior engine designed to enhance the realism and dynamism of non-playable characters (NPCs) in video games. With $16 million in funding, the Edmonton-based startup aims to differentiate itself in the competitive AI NPC space by providing game developers with tools to create NPCs driven by motivations, rules, and goals, offering a more immersive and responsive gaming experience.
