A recent report from the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights highlights the disproportionate harm that facial recognition technology inflicts on people of color and women in various sectors, including law enforcement and public surveillance. The technology, criticized for its potential privacy violations and inaccuracies, is increasingly utilized by federal agencies without sufficient oversight. Chair Rochelle Garza emphasized the urgent need for rigorous testing of these tools to ensure fairness and address disparities among demographic groups. Currently, at least 18 federal agencies have adopted facial recognition technology, and since 2007, the Justice Department has allocated $4.2 million to local law enforcement for related programs, raising concerns about the lack of federal regulations governing its use.
