Advocacy Group Urges Trump to Appoint Elon Musk as AI Adviser

Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI), an AI advocacy group, has launched a petition asking President-elect Trump to appoint Elon Musk as a special adviser on AI. The group believes Musk’s expertise and commitment to both advancing and safely regulating AI make him a strong candidate to lead U.S. AI efforts.

Key Points:

  • ARI’s petition emphasizes the need for America to lead in safe and secure AI development, with Musk's expertise seen as instrumental to this goal.

  • Musk’s contributions to AI, both through his work with Tesla and his startup xAI, demonstrate a commitment to advancing technology while actively addressing AI safety risks.

  • Musk has advocated for regulatory oversight of Big Tech's AI advancements to ensure transparency and mitigate risks, and recently supported a California bill for AI safety testing—though it was ultimately vetoed.

  • While Musk’s involvement in advisory roles could benefit the Trump administration, Tesla investors worry that his additional duties might detract from his responsibilities at the company. This partnership highlights Anthropic’s commitment to supporting U.S. defense agencies with safe, impactful AI, enhancing data analysis and security in sensitive government operations.

With Musk’s unique mix of industry knowledge and advocacy for responsible AI practices, ARI sees him as a valuable advisor to the incoming administration. His involvement could help shape AI policy while raising questions about managing potential conflicts between his White House role and his commitments to Tesla and other ventures.

X Expands AI Chatbot Grok with Limited Free Access

Image: Grok AI

X is now testing a free-access model for its AI chatbot, Grok, which was previously only available to premium users. Grok offers generative AI and image recognition capabilities. The free version, currently being trialed in certain regions, allows users limited access with query caps—10 per two hours for the Grok-2 model and 20 for Grok-2 mini, plus three daily image analysis queries. This expansion aims to attract a broader user base and gain quicker feedback, potentially positioning Grok to compete with popular models like ChatGPT and Claude.
