FTC Cracks Down on Deceptive AI Schemes

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced a major crackdown on deceptive AI claims, targeting three business ventures and two companies, including legal services provider DoNotPay.

Key Points:

  • The FTC filed five enforcement cases, highlighting how companies exploited AI hype to lure consumers into fraudulent schemes.

  • DoNotPay, which marketed itself as "the world’s first robot lawyer," failed to live up to its claims of generating legal documents and offering legal advice. The company settled the charges for $193,000.

  • Schemes under names like Ascend Ecom and Ecommerce Empire Builders falsely promised high returns using AI-powered e-commerce platforms, defrauding consumers of millions.

  • Rytr, an AI writing assistant, was accused of generating fake reviews and testimonials, misleading potential customers.

The FTC’s actions demonstrate a firm stance against companies using AI to deceive consumers, ensuring accountability and fairness in the rapidly evolving AI industry.

Meta Delays Joining EU’s Voluntary AI Pact

Meta Platforms has announced that it will not immediately join the European Union's AI Pact, a voluntary initiative designed to encourage companies to implement key obligations of the upcoming AI Act. The AI Pact serves as a temporary measure until the AI Act, which sets the first comprehensive rules for artificial intelligence development, comes into full effect in August 2026. Meta emphasized its focus on compliance with the AI Act but left open the possibility of joining the pact at a later date. The AI Act is part of a broader framework of EU legislation, alongside the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, Data Governance Act, and Data Act.
