Next week's Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is set to be a transformative event for the tech giant, with a significant focus on integrating artificial intelligence into its devices and software.

Key Points:

  • Siri's AI-Enabled Future: Siri will see a major AI upgrade, allowing it to control individual app features, summarize notifications, and offer more natural-sounding voices.

  • Apple Photos: AI-powered features will enable users to retouch photos and remove objects, similar to Google’s Magic Eraser.

  • Safari and Notes: AI will provide recaps of web pages and notes, transcribe audio, and solve mathematical equations within the Notes app.

  • Voice Memos and iMessages: Real-time transcription for voice memos and AI-generated emojis and text recaps will enhance user experience in iMessages.

  • Mail, Calendar, and Settings: AI will suggest email replies and interact with the Calendar app for scheduling, along with a revamped Settings interface for better organization.

Apple's WWDC 2024 will emphasize the integration of AI across its ecosystem, enhancing functionalities in Siri, Photos, Safari, and more, while maintaining its commitment to user privacy and data security.

Stability AI Unveils Open Model for Generating Sounds and Songs

Image: Stability AI

Stability AI, known for its AI-powered art generator Stable Diffusion, has launched Stable Audio Open, an open AI model designed to generate sounds and songs from text descriptions. Trained on approximately 486,000 royalty-free recordings from FreeSound and the Free Music Archive, the model can create various audio elements like drum beats, instrument riffs, and ambient noises for use in videos, films, and TV shows. Users can also fine-tune the model with their own custom audio data to generate personalized beats and sounds. However, Stable Audio Open has limitations, such as its inability to produce full songs or vocals effectively, and its use is restricted to non-commercial purposes.

Despite the model’s potential, Stability AI acknowledges the biases in its training data, which may not adequately represent all musical styles and cultures, reflecting the diversity limitations of the sources used. The release of Stable Audio Open comes amid ongoing debates over copyright in AI-generated music, highlighted by the recent resignation of Stability AI's VP of generative audio over disagreements about training AI on copyrighted works. As music generation AI grows in popularity, legal challenges, like those posed by Sony Music and recent legislation in Tennessee, underscore the complexities and potential controversies surrounding the use of copyrighted material in AI training.

Quick Takes

  • eBay Launches AI-Generated Background Tool for Sellers: eBay has introduced a new AI-powered feature that allows sellers to replace image backgrounds with AI-generated backdrops, now available for iOS users in the U.S., U.K., and Germany, and rolling out to Android users in the coming months. This tool, following similar launches by Amazon and Google, aims to help sellers create professional-looking photos by replacing backgrounds with customizable options, enhancing eBay’s previous simple white background offering.

  • Asana Enhances Workflow with AI Teammates: Asana's new AI tool aims to provide a flexible approach to managing work inside companies by using generative AI to evaluate and move tasks through workflow stages, ensuring readiness or requesting additional input from humans as needed. Despite its potential, Asana emphasizes the importance of a "human in the loop" approach to supervise AI decisions, ensuring they align with company values and achieve high accuracy in automating administrative and tracking tasks.
